Red Wings Moving Forward With Candidates For New GM Position
Sept 7, 2026: According to Elliotte Friedman, Jeff Greenberg, the GM of the Detroit Tigers baseball team, has withdrawn himself from consideration for the Detroit Red Wings’ open GM position.
Greenberg’s tenure with the Tigers goes back to 2023. His career has teetered between the baseball and hockey realms. Having interned with the Pittsburgh Pirates in college, Greenberg saw his first executive job with the Arizona Diamondbacks in 2011. After nine years, he joined the Chicago Cubs in an Assistant GM position. Greenberg then went from the Cubs to the Blackhawks in 2022 as an associate general manager.
Greenberg informed the Red Wings of his decision, per a spokesperson, according to Cody Stavenhagen of the Athletic, saying he has;
“tremendous respect and admiration for the organization and was honored to be considered for the opportunity, but he is committed to the Tigers and what this group is building.”
Sept 4, 2026: The Detroit Red Wings appear to be moving forward in their search for a new General Manager.
According to Puckpedia, the Wings have told a few candidates they were interviewing that they are no longer in the running for the position. Perhaps they’ve moved forward in their process of finding a suitable candidate to take the place of Steve Yzerman, who is transitioning out of the Red Wings’ general manager role, moving into a senior advisor role while the Red Wings seek a new name to fill Yzerman’s previous Executive Vice President and GM roles.
Earlier this month, it was reported that the Red Wings were interviewing a few candidates, notably, Florida Panthers Assistant GM Brett Peterson and San Jose Sharks Assistant GM Jeff Kealty, who were both said to be in talks per Max Bultman of The Athletic. Bultman also mentioned Carolina Hurricanes Assistant GMs Darren Yorke and Tyler Dellow as potential candidates. While a search firm searches for a full-time GM, Shawn Horcoff will run interim duties until further notice.
So some of these names could or could not be moving forward; that remains to be seen. Nonetheless, rookie and training camp sessions are not far off, and the NHL season is just around the corner. Whoever inherits this position will have to make haste on a few decisions to finalize a 2026-27 roster that is going to have an uphill climb in the Atlantic Division.
First and foremost, the Red Wings have $19MM in cap space that is open for business. One of the players who is open for a contract is defenseman Simon Edvinsson, whose representatives had mentioned talks about a new contract are on hold until a permanent GM is found, which is, in part, what is likely rushing this process forward.
The 23-year-old finished his 2025-26 season with 25 points in 72 games, logging a plus-12 rating, second on the team to Moritz Seider’s plus-15 rating. Edvinsson was the sixth overall pick by the Red Wings back in 2021 and has clearly lived up to the pedigree that a highly-touted draft pick has. If both sides want to get a maximum-term, eight-year agreement in place, they only have until September 15th to do so. AFP Analytics projects a seven-year deal at $8.77MM per season.
There’s also the case of the futures of forwards Dylan Larkin. Larkin was the first bombshell news to occur this summer with his surprise trade request, and yet, he remains with a Winged Wheel next to his name as of now. The Waterford, MI native finished his 2025-26 season scoring 67 points in 74 games and had a +3 rating. After 11 seasons with the Red Wings, Larkin is set to face the music in his own building when the Red Wings make their return. Could that change where he’s wearing a different logo on his chest before the season begins? The new GM will have to make that decision, and whichever way it goes, it will be integral to the trajectory of the organization.
